TO RASPBERRIES—in winter

                                                                     Winter raspberry,

                                                      Out of season, joyful gift.

Promise of summer.

Many of us take joy and pride as we’ve learned to “eat local”—good for our communities and good for our cooking skills.  But once in a while, especially off-season, especially in the cold days of winter, we succumb to the lure of—well, raspberries.  Even in January, good quality berries are available in markets—usually from sunny California.  A small indulgence—a joyful gift.  So, go ahead.  Put a few berries in a small white bowl, add a little sugar, a little cream—and there’s the sweet taste of summer to get you through January.
