NUTMEG SYRUP

NUTMEG SYRUP

The beautiful tropical island of Granada—the island of nutmegs!  Baskets of them in the street markets, and bottles of sweet syrup.  A delicious dessert topping—or a mystery ingredient in your holiday punch.  But no mystery in how to make this sweet treat—just follow the easy directions.

  • 2 cups water
  • 1 cup dark brown sugar
  • 3 nutmegs broken in half

Combine all the ingredients in a saucepan.  Over medium heat, stir with wooden spoon to dissolve sugar— bring mixture to a light boil (small bubbles).  Reduce heat and simmer for about 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.  When mixture thickens and coats the back of the spoon, remove from heat and let cool.  It will thicken a little more as it cools.  Store in fridge in a glass jar with lid—leave nutmeg pieces in place to add more flavor.  Enjoy
