BREAD IN A BAG

BREAD IN A BAG

For some of us, the word yeast in the recipe is a page turner.  But read on—this recipe is one of those things that sounds too good to be true, but it’s true and it’s good!  This is so intriguing, it just begs to be tried.  And what a surprise—first of all, that it actually makes a real loaf of bread, and second, that it’s delicious.  A lovely crust and a nice soft loaf.  Just follow the wonderfully simple directions.

  • 3 cups flour
  • 1 packet of active dry yeast
  • 1 tblsp sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 2 tblsp vegetable oil

In a large plastic bag combine flour, yeast sugar and salt—shake very well, then whisk the ingredients around to make sure they’re well mixed.  Pour in the warm water and oil.  Close the bag, (zip lock type makes it easier) then squeeze bag gently until a dough forms.  Let the closed bag rest 10 minutes.  Meanwhile, pour a little oil into a loaf pan or a 1 ½ qt oval casserole dish.  Oil your hands in the pan and remove bread dough from the bag.  Shape into a loaf—if you see patches that don’t seem to be well mixed, just knead them gently into the dough.  Place oiled loaf into pan, cover with tea towel and let rise until doubled—35 to 45 minutes.  Bake in pre-heated 375’ oven for about 25 minutes—until top is golden and bread sounds hollow when tapped.  Let cool a little before slicing.  Makes excellent toast!
