Last year, almost 40,000 Americans were diagnosed with HIV for the first time. That works out to about 110 people a day.
Globally, almost 6,000 people are newly infected with HIV – each day. AIDS is far from over. You wouldn’t know that by looking at the news. No one seems to talk about it anymore.
For over 30 years on one special day in May, tens of thousands walk for those they love and for those they have lost to AIDS. This year alone, more than $3.6 million dollars have been raised to support AIDS advocacy, treatment and care, and prevention activities. That may sound like a lot of money, but it’s a drop in the bucket in terms of the actual costs needed to fight this horrible disease.
New York City leads the nation in the number of people living with HIV/AIDS and HIV is still the number three cause of death among New Yorkers aged 35 to 54. It’s not too late to donate! This money also helps prevent new HIV infections.
Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we wiped out AIDS in our life time?
